Bol Radha Bol (1992)

Bol Radha Bol

As a child I would watch this David Dhawan film numerous times and it undoubtedly featured amongst my favourite movies, primarily due to the cast as both Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla were my favourites at the time the film released. When I found the DVD in my local store I couldn't help but buy it - it had to be added to my collection. So finally today I got round to watching the film, that was once my favourite, after many years.

Bol Radha Bol is completely different to director David Dhawan’s typical style of filmmaking. It’s not an out and out loud comedy, as what Dhawan is known for directing, and is instead a drama revolving around identity theft with of course moments of both comedy and romance thrown in. However, even though the style is not that typical of Dhawan, the film is no less entertaining then his other ventures. It is a typical masaala movie of the 90’s; full of entertainment, colourful songs, dancing on the hills and a load of overdramatic drama going on – and that’s where the fun lies. I enjoyed the film just as much watching it today as I did all those many years back as a child.

The music is good. Though there isn’t really any track that lives on as a classic or anything, but the songs are fun to both listen to and watch.

Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla made a brilliant onscreen pairing. They were like two chubby teddy bears onscreen together – absolutely adorable, no wonder I’ve been crazy about them ever since I was about 3 or 4 years old!

Rishi delivers a brilliantly natural performance as per usual. His expressions are real and believable. Juhi is as lovable as ever, she looks and performs typically in her style and stole my heart all over.

Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan, Sushma Seth, Kiran Kumar & Alok Nath each did justice to their characters.

Overall, Bol Radha Bol is one of the many names on the list of David Dhawan’s great works. I really enjoyed watching it after such a long gap and I’m so glad I’ve finally added the DVD to my collection.
